Types of Connections to an Internet Service Provider (ISP)

There are several types of connections available to the Internet through an ISP. See also the prior section on Digital Information Channels (Bandwidth) and Connectors and Emerging Connection Channels.

TCP/IP is the standard protocol on the Internet to transfer files. TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Program. TCP/IP was developed by the Department of Defense and is one of several software protocols that can be used to connect computers together. It is widely used in Ethernet systems and packet radio systems.
