Chapter 6 - Computer Concepts and Legal Applications

Database Contrasted with Word Processing.

You may have created a document, legal, or witness index with references to specific factual information with a word processing program. If any of the information changed in that index, then it was necessary to go back into the word processing program, add the necessary information, rearrange columns and locations of information, change numbering, etc.

This is not necessary if you use a database program. In a database, once you have entered information in a particular field in a record and you subsequently change that information or add new records, then the computer will automatically retrieve, resort, and REPRINT a report reflecting the changes in your case. This capability to reuse the SAME data for many purposes also applies to other fields in your computer database records, such as document number, document condition, persons connected with specific documents, legal issues, etc. This capability has saved law firms countless hours and is one of the major reasons that they continue to use databases.
